Mountain Valley Developmental Services, Inc. is holding an athletic shoe drive fundraiser until Nov 11, 2025 to raise money for its Day Programs in Glenwood Springs, Silt and Minturn. MVDS will earn funds based on the total quantity of gently worn, used, and new sneakers (only) collected, and this first year has a goal of collecting 500 pairs. The
Mountain Valley Developmental Services has been supporting children (birth to age 3) and adults (18 to end of life) with intellectual and developmental disabilities for over 50 years. Our Adult Services Programs include residential, enrichment and employment services. The Day Program enrichment programs include horseback riding, skiing, visiting museums, and competing in Special Olympics sports.
GotSneakers, a zero-waste sneaker recycling social enterprise, will issue funds in compensation for the collected sneakers. Those funds will benefit the MVDS Day Programs. Anyone can help by simply donating gently worn, used, and new sneakers. Sneakers not passed along to resale will be recycled, keeping landfills free of these long-decomposing materials. MVDS will work with its community partners to collect the sneakers at these 8 drop-off locations: Defiance Thrift Store, 2412 S. Glen Ave, Glenwood Springs, Tues-Sat, 10am-4pm; MVDS Glenwood Springs Day Program, 700 Mt. Sopris Drive, Glenwood Springs, Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm; Divine Moon, 111 W. 3rd, Rifle, Mon-Sat, 11am-5pm; MVDS Silt Day Program, 580 Home Ave, Silt, Mon-Fri, 9am-3pm; MVDS Minturn Day Program, 472 Main St, Minturn, Mon-Fri, 9am-3pm; GrassRoots Community Network, 110 E. Hallam St, Ste 132, Aspen, Wed, 10a-4pm; Aspen High School High School Appreciation Club, 235 High School Rd, Aspen, Mon-Fri, 8am-3pm KDNK-FM, 76 S. 2nd St, Carbondale, Mon-Fri, 10am-4pm.
“We are excited about our sneaker drive fundraiser,” said Sara Sims, MVDS executive director, “We know that most people in this high alpine region have extra sneakers in their closets that they’d like to donate rather than throw away. By doing so, we’re raising money for supplies and materials to support our Adult Services Day Programs while also helping the local environment. We are also very grateful to our thrift-store and other community partners’ help in collecting the sneakers. It’s a community and environmental win – win for everyone!” MVDS will be paid $7 for an excellent pair of sneakers, $2 for a good pair, $1 for a fair pair and $0 for non-athletic or non-paired sneakers.
GotSneakers has developed a unique fundraising program that asks communities to reach into their closets, not their pockets. The sneaker recycling program* helps keep sneakers out of landfills, which has harmful effects on the environment, and helps organizations like MVDS raise much needed funds. *Sneaker recycling has become an increasingly popular topic in recent years, as people become more aware of the environmental impact of their footwear. Sneakers can take several decades to even hundreds of years to decompose in a landfill. The production of new sneakers requires a significant amount of energy and resources and has a severely damaging impact on the environment. At GotSneakers, sneaker recycling is a way to reduce the footwear industry’s impact on our planet by keeping sneakers out of landfills and extending the life of sneakers through resale and recycling.
